Master Course Curriculum and Methodology for Education for Sustainable Society (ESS)

The Institute for Global Change Adaptation Science (ICAS) of Ibaraki University is planning to hold the Second International Symposium on Education for Sustainable Society (ESS), with the theme “Master Course Curriculum and Methodology for Education for Sustainable Society”. In the previous symposium held on Dec. 18, 2007, internationally active speakers reported their practices under the title of “Training Community-based Practitioners”. Building on the success of the outcome of previous symposium, we (1) focus on our own place-based practice in Asia for the Education for Sustainable Society, (2) present a practical plan for an overseas seminar to be held in Thailand in 2009, (3) assess curriculum and methodologies in this field, such as the “Dilemma Story”, and (4) consider related activities in Ibaraki University and elsewhere. The “Dilemma Story” is now recognized as an appropriate methodology toward double-edged issues. Therefore a workshop on the “Dilemma Story” will be provided for master students by a guest speaker. This is planned to be held in advance (Dec. 8-9) of the symposium, allowing to be reported at the symposium.

持続可能な社会に向けた教育のための大学院カリキュラムと教育方法

　茨城大学地球変動適応科学研究機関(ICAS)は標記のテーマで第2 回国際シンポジウ ム開催します。昨年12 月に開催しました第1 回のシンポジウムでは、「地域に根ざした 実践家の育成」というテーマで、世界各国で活躍する方々に報告いただき、有意義な討 論ができました。前回の議論を踏まえ、今回は (1) アジアを舞台に茨城大学が行う地 域に根ざしたESS 実践に焦点を当て、(2) 来年度タイで行われる国際実践演習の計画を お示しし、(3) ジレンマストーリーを例に具体的な教育方法をご披露します。そして、 (4)茨城大学内外の他の実践からお話しをうかがい、あるべき姿を模索したいと思いま す。ジレンマストーリーは、両刃性のある諸問題に対処する有効な方法であると考えら れていることから、大学院生を対象にしたワークショップをシンポジウムに先立って実 施し（12 月8-9 日）、本シンポジウムでその様子を報告する予定です。
